Mermaids, unrequited love, and violas

Yes, Shoreline has all this, and more. It’s a quiet and beautifully evocative work composed by Cynthia Lee Wong, based on a short story by screenwriter, Janelle Evans, who explains, “This story was inspired by the Persian word ‘maneli’ which means both mermaid and ‘stay with me.’ Intrigued by the dual meaning of the phrase and the complexity of it being uttered by a creature frequently symbolizing death, I wrote the story of Musiline and her quest for love and self-acceptance, told with the ocean’s voice as its meter.”

I’m proud to have commissioned this new work for oboe, and given its premier. On this Valentine’s Day, enjoy being transported to a magical world of oboe, harp, viola and mermaid.
